Research Topic

For my research paper, I want to look at women who use plays or movies as their autobiographies. I want to go into what inspires them to put their life up to someone else's interpretation, how they cast their life, and things like that.

I really like your idea for your research paper! I think it will be an interesting topic to further examine- especially the question "what inspires them to put themr life up to someone else's interpretation..?"

I think that it will be beneficial if you narrow down your topic with two or three case studies of women who used plays/movies as autobiographies. Perhaps a comparison would be interesting as well. You could compare men and women- examining why there are more women who have autobiographies in the form of movies than men...or comparing two different women who have used movies as autobiographies..or comparing book autobiographies and movie autobiographies.

The first person that comes to my mind is Debra winger, because we already studied her. Her documentary can be a form of an autobiography because she examines her life struggles and her identity questions through other actresses. You could apply the question as to what inspired her to put her life up to critique and interpretation of others with this documentary.

Another example I can think of is the TV series "I Love Lucy." Lucy displays her life through this TV series and you could examine her reasonsings behind showing the world her life.

Because your topic is still on the broad side, maybe using the Academic Search Premier database would be helpful at first.

I found an article that might interest you. It's regarding successful women. The first women mentioned is a successful writer. With her, you can maybe compare writing autobiographies versus acting autobiographies. Another women mentioned is KYRA SEDGWICK, an actress. I'm not sure if she acted in her own autobiography, but she explains how acting has affected and shaped her identity.

The article is called: "My journey to the top" by Newsweek from Academic Search Premier.

The citation is:
"My Journey To the Top. (Cover story)." Newsweek 150.16 (15 Oct. 2007): 48-65. Academic Search Premier. EBSCO. [Library name], [City], [State abbreviation]. 29 October 2007.

Hiiiii,

Although we talked on the phone about your notes, these are them for your convenience:

1. Men and women - the differences between plays when they write about themselves (gender)

2. Are you going for an equal focus or leaning towards one playwright?

3. Most persuasive if the paper is more compare than contrast - similarity in humor but big difference in how they write themselves in
>gender (females in general) vs. personal statement (males)

4. How does audience perceive the two styles?

5. Tentative Answer:
>general sources about playwrights
>Why important?
>"So what?" factor needed
> What texts are you using? (suggestion was to connect 2 plays that were similar)

5. Might be interesting to compare the disappointments in their lives

Hope this helps!

Let me know,
